Taking the Sky

Aren’t kites magical? Pieces of plastic and clothe take the sky, almost as if they were flying, being held only by a small piece of string. It really is out of this world and I think that is the reason why Morro Bay, California takes one day out of the year to celebrate kites. That’s right, every April maybe hundreds of kites take flight in the beaches of Morro Bay for a family-fun festival.

Needing something to make a flyer for, I decided to make one for this great event. I knew I wanted to make the poster reasonably simple and I knew I wanted to emphasize the kites in the sky. I originally used a rainbow of colors for my color palette but thought that it was too over powering. It took away from the type and just seemed a little gaudy. That’s why I simplified the palette to just patriotic colors to also symbolize this old-fashion All-American event.

Let’s go fly a kite! I like this poster. I love the flatness and the way your eyes draw a line diagonally from the top left to the bottom right corner. Good composition! I’m surprised you chose such patriotic colors for something held in the springtime. It still works, though.

One question: The “1” in 2010 looks like an “I” is that what the typeface really looks like? What typeface is that?
